Helen Lee Schifter, a former Wall Street arbitrage trader and former editor for Hearst and Conde Nast knows a lot about fashion. Schifter believes in the power of wardrobe to enhance self-esteem and confidence, and she not only lives it, but quite often writes about it.

A New Acceptance of body Image

One of the new things that has been predominantly featured on the internet is women having more acceptance of their body. Even Hollywood stars and influencers such as Khloe Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Katie Holmes, Ashley Graham, and Chrissy Teigen have come to accept that  they have stretch marks and imperfections on their body.

What’s that got to do with fashion? Helen Lee Schifter believes that as people accept their inner imperfections, now more than ever, they rely on fashion to look and feel beautiful. Wearing beautiful clothes just makes a woman feel confident, and that confidence shows in their work. And though women are catching up in the workplace, they still have a ways to go, so that extra boost can come in handy.

A Blast from the Past

One of the elements of fashion that can’t be ignored is that fashion tends to be cyclical.

For example, one article touted high-waisted mom jeans from the 90s, round glasses from the 20s, corduroy pants from the 70’s, cargo pants from the 90s, and bike shorts from the 80s as in.

The big difference between the 2020s and yesteryear is that most people hardly ever notice the shift.

Today, people wear pretty much what they want to express their individuality as long as it is decent taste.

And as for the young, tattooed generation, well it seems casual but dressy is the new mantra.

People do want to look fashionable but they also want to be comfortable.

Expressing Their Individuality

One thing about the 40s and 50s that is out is uniformity. Watch any movie from the 40s and 50s and you’ll see enough Capri pants to burn the rods and retinas of your eyes.

Meanwhile, men in the past, up until the hippie generation exploded, wore a uniform.

If they worked in an office, they wore a white shirt, a skinny tie, perhaps a trench coat, and a hat. When was the last time you saw a man wearing a hat other than a baseball cap.

Different Shopping Habits

While a sizable percentage of the population was willing to shell out money for Gucci or Chanel, today, internet shopping retail is dead. You can buy more clothes on Amazon than would fill 10 department stores.

The shopping trends of today’s citizens drastically affect the influence of fashion in everyday life.

Both men and women, it seems, care less about a certain brand or style, and they don’t hunger to imitate the boss. Fashion now is more egalitarian than ever. And good riddance. If people are reasonably dressed, let them be as comfortable as they want and wear what they choose.
